Strawberry Poison Dart Frog Project
This project was developed for my senior art students with the goal of streamlining the video tutorials and centering the instruction on the use of Prismacolor Scholar coloured pencils. The purpose of the project was twofold.
First, I wanted to ensure the work remained accessible to all students, demonstrating that realistic rendering is achievable with more affordable materials. Second, I selected a subject that would encourage the use of a wider range of colours than those typically explored in my fur-based projects, while also introducing the challenge of rendering a very different texture: amphibian skin.
Through this process, students learned how to depict wet, reflective surfaces while deepening their understanding of value through the layering and blending of complementary colours. We also explored the use of PanPastels for the background, which students found both engaging and effective in enhancing composition, depth, and overall visual cohesion.
Class of 2025-26 Grade 10
I had the pleasure of teaching this group of students last year in Grade 9. This year, I wanted to challenge them with something entirely new, building on their initial experience of completing a portrait from start to finish. I was genuinely impressed by the level of talent and the growth each student demonstrated throughout the process.
Students were required to draw on a range of skills, including problem-solving, time management, attention to detail, and critical thinking, in order to successfully complete the project. I am proud to showcase their work here and look forward to the opportunity to teach them again.
