Van Gogh Irises Painting Project
Van Gogh (1853 - 1890), Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, May 1890 Irises Against Yellow Background
I had the privilege of supporting the art club at my children’s school, which was open to Grade 5 and 6 students. The focus of our projects was the work of Vincent van Gogh. Through studying and recreating elements of his artwork, students not only explored the techniques he used but also developed a deeper appreciation for how he interpreted and expressed the world around him.
Throughout the process, students learned how to use complementary colours to communicate emotion, break complex forms into simple shapes, create the visual effect of impasto painting, and work with acrylic markers on mixed media paper. The project encouraged both technical growth and creative expression while introducing students to the artistic language of one of history’s most influential painters.
