Van Gogh Starry Night Project
Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night Saint Rémy, June 1889
Throughout the process, students learned how to use complementary colours to communicate emotion, simplify complex forms into basic shapes, and mix colours intentionally within a limited palette to create rich and dynamic colour relationships. They also explored how to create the visual effect of impasto while working with acrylic paint on black mixed media board. In addition to developing technical skills, students learned to work within time constraints and make thoughtful artistic decisions throughout the creative process.
This project encouraged both artistic growth and creative expression while introducing students to the visual language and expressive approach of one of history’s most influential artists. One of my favourite parts of teaching this project was seeing how each student brought their own creativity and perspective to the work, transforming a shared reference into something uniquely their own.
Through guided direct-to-draw instruction, Grade 5 and 6 students recreated one of Vincent van Gogh’s most iconic works. By studying and reinterpreting his painting, students not only explored the techniques that defined his artistic style but also developed a deeper appreciation for the way he observed, interpreted, and expressed the world around him.
